History:
Star of the Sea High School was founded by the Servite Order in the early 1950's. At the time KwaNgwanase was an extremely rural area. As Star of the Sea was one of the first schools in the area, the priests forming the school had to literally persuade parents to let their children come to school. This was an arduous task because sending a child to schoolmeant losing their help at home.
Through many dedicated years, Servites, especially the late Father Al Mooney, OSM, were able to mold Star of the Sea into one of the most prestigious schools throughout theentire province of KwaZulu-Natal. Though the school still faces many hardships as a result of poverty and classroom overcrowding, Star has continued to set the bar of success for schools in the area. School alumni include a handful of priests, principals, and members of government.
Star of the Sea truly lives their motto: Shine That Others May Shine Too.
Cultural Demographic:
Students attending Star of the Sea come primarily from impoverished families.Except for one student, Star of the Sea students are all black. The majority of the students come from the local area, but there are a few students whose families have immigrated to South Africa.
